Sound Dance: The Music of Muhal Richard Abrams

The Jazz Ensemble will celebrate the music of composer and pianist Muhal Richard Abrams, one of the most prolific and influential African American composers and improvisers of the past century. As one of the original founders of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in Chicago, Abrams worked tirelessly as a composer, educator, and arts organizer to expand the possibilities of and opportunities for improvised music within and beyond African American musical traditions, and to train young musicians toward this quest. The ensemble will perform select compositions from across Abrams’s long career in celebration of this NEA Jazz Master’s widely influential contributions to creative music.
