“In addition to enjoying a thriving academic atmosphere within the Music Department, grad students also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of campus and division-wide organizations and initiatives all aimed at creating a sense of community beyond the walls of any one department.”
– Jon Bullock, PhD in Ethnomusicology
The University of Chicago is situated in Chicago’s historic Hyde Park neighborhood, one of the city’s most diverse neighborhoods and a cultural center for Chicago’s South Side. Most graduate students in the Humanities, including those in the Music Department, live in Hyde Park where they are steps away from delicious restaurants, world class music and performance venues, art, science, and cultural museums, and some of the most stunning architecture the city has to offer. Located right next to Lake Michigan, Hyde Park residents also have easy access to the beautiful beaches and lakefront trails that extend north and south along the so-called “Third Coast.” For those who have the urge to venture beyond Hyde Park and experience the city, Chicago boasts dozens of unique neighborhoods to explore, each with its own distinctive flair.
On campus, graduate students are invited to become as involved in campus and community life as they desire. Students have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of interdisciplinary workshops and centers as well as a variety of social events and organizations sponsored by different departments and UChicagoGRAD. Many serve in various capacities in student government or on departmental and divisional committees, and some become involved in the neighborhood community as well through programs like the university's Neighborhood Schools Program (NSP).
