About

Teresa (She/Her(s)) is a PhD student in the Music Department at the University of Chicago. Her research explores social justice activism through the lens of digital musicking on social media platforms. By facilitating conversations around digital music-making, she exposes how music serves as a conduit for social change through sonic mediations, visual markers, and cultural symbols repurposed globally.

Focusing on the soundscape of feminist movements on TikTok, Teresa examines their specific audio content as a conduit to spread messages, reclaim personal narratives, and perpetuate social justice movements. By addressing thematic questions about the affective similarities of these songs, her work delves into how these clips modulate across digital networks, discussing emotion, community, and identity through distinct musical practices online. This investigation uncovers tropes and scripts related to sexual violence narratives, body dysmorphia, their respective histories, and self-determination.

Drawing from linguistic anthropology, ethnomusicology, philosophy, activist sociology, and personal accounts from content creators, Teresa explores the power of song choice in digital media and its affective impact. Her research highlights the capacity of songs to communicate and perpetuate social justice narratives and modern feminism through digital musicking.
